VEIL OF SECRECY

patient_ot Very nice piece of gritty dark ambient from Steven Hall of Yen Pox. As others mentioned, this should really be better known but for some reason remains obscure. If you are a Yen Pox fan, this is a must have.

Phyein Dark, dirty, analog ambience with a bit of a cyberpunk influence. Where the futuristic cities reach higher and higher into the skies, this album dwells amongst the dark, polluted, seedy surface levels. Think 24/7 dark, with only lonely neon lights and industrial amber lights ever so slightly illuminating ypur way. The sound of filthy machinery and straining structures hidden away from the bright side of civilization are constantly churning and echoing in the distance throughout this claustrophobic landscape, in the form of echoing mechanical clings, hisses, and some seriously foreboding mechanical "howls". All with a very analog sheen. The final track is akin to the ending credits, an awesome "cinematic" motif that hammers home that gritty 70s-80s scifi atmosphere that has such a unique and hard to replicate feel. Very evocative stuff! Favorite track: Coronation Of Jackals.

Danica Swanson A truly marvelous but sadly overlooked 2001 release from the talented Steven Hall. Moody and breathtaking in its sophistication and range, the emotional landscape of this release speaks in many tongues. This is enormously underrated! It should be at least as well known as Blood Box and Yen Pox, yet for reasons I don't understand, it received barely a whisper. Glad it's now on Bandcamp, where it will hopefully attract the appreciation and support it deserves! Favorite track: Throne To The Dogs.

about

Veil Of Secrecy was recorded between 1995 and 2000.

"V.O.S. (Veil of Secrecy) is the solo project of one Steve Hall, who is most famously known as one-half of the amazing dark ambient band Yen Pox. Michael Hensley, the other half of Yen Pox, records his solo endeavors as Blood Box, a mixture of suffocating atmospheres and sparse, cinematic drones mixed with somber melodies. Veil Of Secrecy, on the other hand, had produced little material since its incarnation, until now. The self-titled disc on the Triumvirate label possess a dark ambient backdrop throughout much of the music as we might expect from a Yen Pox member, very brooding and austere. Thankfully, just as Michael Hensley sought a different direction with his solo material, so did Steve Hall with V.O.S.; Steve Hall weaves a multi-colored tapestry of sound into his music, using hums, short noises, reverberations, and most surprisingly, guitar. The
guitar is most tastefully employed in the album, creating metallic textures and slight rumblings. The last track is the shortest as well; it is the most structured-oriented piece centered around a simple but very effective and spacious guitar riff. Steve Hall has exceeded on many levels with this self-titled disc, welding all the familiar elements of dark
ambient music, plus a few other instruments to forge his own signature sound. This is quite simply an amazing disc. My only hope is that we will not have to wait so
long for future V.O.S. work. Outstanding."
